La fotografia, per definizione, congela per sempre un attimo nel tempo in un’immagine. In questo progetto mi interessava invece mostrare il passare del tempo, rendendolo visibile nelle mie fotografie prima attraverso la scelta di soggetti e condizioni meteorologiche particolari, e poi, tecnicamente, attraverso l’uso di pose lunghe spesso nell’ordine di minuti. Per un tale progetto, la scelta del bianco e nero mi è stata subito evidente. Chiaramente, il tempo conta anche per la fotografia come arte e mestiere. Oggi viviamo in un mondo multicolorato dove siamo costantemente attaccati da milioni di immagini dalla vita media di pochi minuti, tutte in competizione l’una con l’altra per attirare la nostra attenzione. L’arma da loro prescelta è l’esagerazione; per tentare di sopraffarci usano sia la forza del loro numero che quella degli inutili effetti visivi da loro utilizzati. Il bianco e nero, usato qui sia come scelta artistica sia quasi come antidoto, ci riporta invece alle radici della fotografia costringendo fotografo e spettatore a riflettere su quello che conta davvero: soggetto, composizione e uso della luce, tutti strumentali alla trasmissione del messaggio – Time (&) Matters.
Molti di coloro che conoscono mia moglie Zeynep sanno che mi segue come indispensabile assistente sul campo da quando ho cominciato a lavorare come fotografo di paesaggio; non molti sanno che è anche una scrittrice pubblicata. Preparando il progetto di questa mostra, che ho anche pubblicato come primo progetto del mio nuovo sito di stampe Fine Art (https://vieribottazzinifineart.com/it), mi è stato naturale chiederle di parteciparvi, e sono lieto che abbia gentilmente accettato: una cooperazione risultata nelle brevi storie di tre righe che vedrete arricchire ogni fotografia del progetto.
Photography, by definition, freezes an instant in time on an image forever. In this project I was interested in showing the passing of time instead, making it visible on my photographs first through the choice of particular subject matters and weather conditions, and then, technically, through the use of long exposures oftentimes in the order of minutes. For such a project, the choice of black and white was immediately a given for me. Clearly, time matters also for photography as an art and a craft. Today we live in a multi-coloured world where we are constantly attacked by millions of images with the lifespan of a few minutes only, all trying to compete for our attention. Their weapon of choice is exaggeration, they try and overwhelm us through both the power of their number and that of the amount of unnecessary visual effects they use. Black and white, used here both as an artistic choice and almost as an antidote, brings us back to the roots of photography forcing both photographer and viewer to reflect on what really counts, subject, composition and use of light, all instrumental to convey the message – Time (&) Matters.
People knowing my wife Zeynep know that she follows me as my indispensable assistant in the field since I started working as a landscape photographer; not many know that she is a published author as well. Getting this exhibition’s project ready, a project I also published as the first of my new Fine Art Prints website https://vieribottazzinifineart.com), it came naturally to me to ask her to be a part of it. I am happy to say that she kindly accepted: a cooperation resulting in the short three-line stories enriching every photograph in this project.

Musicista per formazione e fotografo autodidatta, sono Leica Ambassador, docente Leica Akademie Italy e Formatt-Hitech Ambassador, oltre che Qualificato Associate del British Institute of Professional Photography (ABIPP) e European Photographer (EP). Dopo una ventennale carriera da solista di musica classica, dal 2010 coniugo la passione di una vita per la fotografia con il mio amore per la natura e gli spazi aperti dedicandomi esclusivamente alla fotografia di paesaggio Fine Art.
Con venticinque anni d’insegnamento alle spalle, credo fermamente che i Workshop siano il miglior modo per condividere il mio entusiasmo per la fotografia e per le bellezze della Terra con persone altrettanto appassionate. Le mie destinazioni preferite sono l’Islanda, la Scozia, la Spagna, il Regno Unito, il Sudovest Americano, la Turchia e naturalmente l’Italia, dove sono tornato a vivere nel 2014 dopo quindici anni all’estero.
Il mio lavoro è stato esibito e pubblicato internazionalmente ed è parte di diverse collezioni private. Quando non sono in giro per il mondo a fotografare, insegnare Workshops, per conferenze o in giurie di concorsi, lavoro alle mie fotografie, preparo le mie stampe Fine Art e scrivo recensioni e articoli di argomento fotografico.

A musician by training and a self-taught photographer, I am Leica Ambassador, Leica Akademie Italy instructor and Formatt-Hitech Ambassador, as well as Qualified Associate of the British Institute of Professional Photography (ABIPP) and European Photographer (EP). After a two-decades career as a solo artist in classical music, since 2010 I combined my lifelong passion for photography with my love for nature and the wilderness dedicating myself exclusively to Fine Art Landscape photography.
With 25 years of teaching on my back, I firmly believe that Workshops are the best way to share my enthusiasm for photography and for the Earth’s beauty with like-minded people. My favourite destinations are Iceland, Scotland, Spain, the United Kingdom, the American Southwest, Turkey and, of course, Italy where I settled in 2014 after living 15 years abroad.
My work has been published and exhibited internationally and is part of various private collections. When I am not around the world photographing, teaching Workshops, lecturing or adjudicating competitions, I work on my photographs, prepare my Fine Art prints and write reviews and articles about photography.
